In August 2024, I took part in an intensive summer school in Basel, spending two weeks at my painter friend’s home studio. It was an intense, immersive creative process, where each weekday unfolded into a new small painting on paper. These works were born from everyday impressions that resonated me deeply.
Every evening, I wandered through the twilight-lit streets of Basel—the old town, the quiet alleys, often deep into the night, when the city had almost come to a standstill. I often found myself in Kannenfeldpark, where the shifting light cast a quiet spell over the trees and pathways. These walks shaped many of my impressions, and though I painted during the day as well, it was at night that I worked most intensely, under dimmed light, in a quiet, concentrated solitude. It was in these moments that I found the greatest clarity and depth in my work. Not every attempt resulted in a finished piece, but each brushstroke was part of the process—a practice, an exploration.
Many more works emerged during those two weeks, but the ones that carried the strongest impressions came together as “The Basel Paintings”—a series of nine.
